LONG TERM CONSTRUCTION: NJDOT officials 5/15 announced a project to resurface more than six miles of Route 202 southbound from south of CR 514 (Old York Road) in East Amwell to the vicinity near Headquarters Road in Lambertville, Hunterdon County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Arawak Paving Inc., began preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation last week and initial milling operations began earlier this week near the Route 31 interchange in East Amwell.
The $2.6 million project will mill and resurface Route 202 southbound with a new surface course of asphalt pavement from milepost 6.8 in East Amwell through West Amwell to milepost 0.4 in Lambertville. This concentrated effort to repair the deficient roadway will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes and shoulders. The project also includes concrete surface repairs to the bridge structures over CR 605/Alexauken Creek in West Amwell and over Route 179 in East Amwell.
Construction will be performed during overnight and off-peak hours in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 202, a major commuter route carrying an average of over 14,600 vehicles through this stretch each day. The project, which was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers, is scheduled for completion in early-fall 2013.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission is urging job commuters
in the Lehigh Valley/Warren County region to plan ahead and get E-ZPass so they can reduce driving times when using route 78 as a travel alternative after the Easton-Phillipsburg (Route 22) Toll Bridge is reduced to single lanes in each direction for a rehabilitation project next month.

To assist area residents and commuters in acquiring E-ZPass accounts in advance of the
advancing bridge project, the Commission will conduct an E-ZPass QuickStart sign-up
session from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the Pennsylvania Welcome Center adjacent to the Commission’s toll plaza on I-78 westbound in Williams Township.

Motorists seeking E-ZPass accounts should keep right after crossing the I-78 Toll Bridge and take the exit ramp immediately after the Commission’s toll plaza to access the I-78 Welcome Center. Vehicles that use the Express E-ZPass lanes on the left cannot access the Welcome Center.

QuickStart events offer an expedited application process, enabling commuters to sign up for E-ZPass and drive away with an active tag and a $25 account balance in less than 10 minutes. The Commission charges a $1 monthly E-ZPass account fee, and up to four transponders can be registered to a single account. Customers must bring their vehicle registration cards, drivers licenses, and a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover).

The Commission is urging area residents and job commuters to use I-78 as a travel alternative once a multi-faceted rehabilitation project gets underway at the Easton-Phillipsburg (Route 22) Toll Bridge during June. The project is going to require single-lane travel in each direction on the bridge for six months in 2013 and nine months in 2014. The lane restrictions are likely to cause significant traffic congestion and delays, especially during peak travel periods.
