Columbia Trail Bike Tour

The Columbia Trail is a converted railroad bed. The trail features beautiful scenery along a relatively flat, compact dirt path. About 5 miles into the trail you will enter the town of Califon. An additional 3 miles and you will find your way across Route 513 to the rest of the trail that ends in Long Valley. Note: this portion of the trail is not marked as well.

Where to start your ride: Take Interstate 78 to 31 North (Clinton Exit). Take 31 North a couple miles to Route 513 North in High Bridge. Stay on Route 513, make a right into High Bridge and then a left at the top of the hill on Main street. The trail head is clearly marked a couple blocks up on your right. Parking is available in a municipal parking lot on Route 513.

Other local bike tours: Last Covered Bridge, The D&R Canal Tow Path Ride, Lamington River Ride, Round Valley Roundabout

Really pretty ride along the water. Good ride to beginners and families along the trail itself.

The River Road route has been washed out in many places by the recent storms. It is walkable or ridable only if you have a full suspension bike to get through the rocky sections.

As an added feature while riding, keep an eye out for gnome homes that folks have hidden off the trail and in trees. Quite fun to search out while riding and adds to scenery. It is also a microclimate so even in hot weather the trail is much cooler

The Columbia trail is much less crowded than the D&R Towpath and equally flat. I was really excited about the River Road option. Basically no traffic on it and it's beautiful.
