Basics of Carpooling
There are two basic types of carpool arrangements:
- Carpool uses one car owned by one driver. One person does all of the driving and driving costs are shared by both driver and passenger.
- Carpoolers take turns using and driving their own vehicles so that driving and associated costs are equally shared by all.
Tips for Getting Started
Whether you already know your carpool mate(s) or you have received names of potential mates from HART , the following is recommended:
- Arrange an initial meeting over lunch or coffee, to get to know each other and/or discuss how your carpool will operate.
- Decide on pick up locations, pick up times. Agree on waiting times, side trips or other special considerations (smoking, car temperature, eating, drinking, etc).
- Agree on driving responsibilities, what car(s) will be used, how fuel costs, tolls or other expenses will be shared.
- Start out on a trial basis. Agree to try it for one month. If it doesn't work out, contact HART to find another carpool mate.
- Keep a phone and/or e-mail list of all carpool or vanpool members. Agree on notification procedures in the event of illness, vehicle trouble, weather conditions, or other schedule changes.
