Street Smart Overview

Street Smart NJ is a public education, awareness and behavioral change campaign to address pedestrian safety.

New Jersey’s incidence of injury and fatal motor vehicle crashes involving pedestrians is more than double the national average. Ensuring that all roadways are safe for walkers, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers is critical.

The Street Smart campaign seeks to change driver and pedestrian behavior and reduce pedestrian deaths and injuries, by:

  • Educating drivers and pedestrians about safe roadway practices.
  • Increasing enforcement of pedestrian safety laws and making drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists aware of that effort.
  • Developing a program that can be easily replicated in other New Jersey communities that want to decrease pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

5 key behaviors

Street Smart NJ is coordinated by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), supported by federal and state funds, and funding/in-kind contributions from local partners.

HART Commuter Information Services is working to spread the campaign messaging by bringing the Street Smart program to Hunterdon County, NJ.

The Street Smart Campaign focuses on reinforcing 5 key behaviors to improve safety:

  • Stop for Pedestrians
  • Obey Speed Limits

  • Be careful when passing vehicles stopped at or adjacent to crosswalks and intersections.
  • Stop and look for pedestrians and bicyclists before turning right on red.

  • If there is no crosswalk, cross only at corners and intersections.
